Indian Wine Industry

Presently India may be classified with New World Wine Producing countries but the origins of the wine processing in the country are shrouded in the mists of antiquity.

The fact that the first wineries were set up in 1970. Over the last few years, the Indian wine market was growing at a phenomenal rate of 25-30%. The key regions for growing wine grapes are the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka in India’s south west. In the state of Maharashtra, Nashik is designated as the Wine Capital of the country.

Consumption of Wine in India

  • The size of the wine industry in India is estimated at Rs 1500 crore and has grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 15 to 20%.

  • Volume of wine consumed in India has grown from 26 lac litres in 2003 to 2 crore litres in 2023

  • Consumption is mainly concentrated in the major metropolitan areas, which account for nearly 70% of wine demand.

  • The biggest consumption areas are located in Mumbai (35%), Goa (10%), Delhi (21%) and Bangalore (12%).

  • The wine industry is estimated to achieve 5 crore litres of wine consumption by 2030 at a compounded annual growth rate of 20%.

  • Growth of the domestic wine industry has provided significant employment opportunities to unskilled labourers.

  • Demand for grapes for wine production has provided livelihood to a number of farmers
